Description

T.E.D. Anti-Embolism Stockings from Cardinal Health are clinically proven to help reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and promote increased blood flow in the legs. These stockings have also been shown to prevent the damaging effects of venous distension that occurs during surgery. These stockings apply the clinically proven graduated pressure pattern of 18mmHg at the ankle, 14mmHg at the calf, 10 mmHg at the lower thigh, and 8 mmHg at the upper thigh, helping to support effective venous return. They address two components of Virchow’s Triad: Stasis and vessel wall damage.

Designed for ease of use and patient comfort, the stockings feature a defined heel pocket to ensure correct placement and a toe opening that allows for easy inspection of the skin and pulse, and the various sizings ensure that these stockings are suitable to fit a wide range of patients.

The T.E.D. Anti-Embolism Stockings are made with material that is not manufactured with natural rubber latex, making it suitable for patients with latex sensitivities. They feature a clinically proven pressure pattern increases blood flow velocity and reduces venous distension, and a  pressure break at the popliteal vein that helps to ensure that blood will continue to flow smoothly through this critical area. The stockings also have an interrupted band and 2-ply gusset that prevents a tourniquet effect at the femoral vein, and an inlay  circumferential knit, helping to provide one way horizontal stretch.

Uses

These T.E.D. Anti-Embolism Stockings are used to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis in patients who are immobile, hospitalised, or undergoing surgery. They support improved blood circulation in the legs, help prevent venous distension, and contribute to overall vascular health during periods of reduced mobility.

Application

How to Measure Thigh Length Style Stockings:

Accurate measurement is essential to ensure the correct level of compression and effectiveness of T.E.D Anti-Embolism Stockings. Measurements should be taken with the patient lying down where possible. Correct sizing is essential to achieve the intended compression profile, and incorrect sizing may reduce effectiveness or cause discomfort. Always ensure compatibility with the patient’s condition and follow clinical guidance.

If the upper thigh circumference is below 91.4cm, thigh-length stockings are generally recommended. If the thigh circumference is above 91.4cm, knee-length stockings may be more appropriate, depending on the patient’s condition.

  • Measure the upper thigh circumference at the buttock fold
  • Measure the calf circumference at the widest point
  • Measure the leg length from the heel to the buttock fold

Putting on the Stocking:

  • Select the correct size based on accurate leg measurements
  • Put the hand inside the stocking and grab the heel pocket
  • Pull the stocking inside out
  • Place the stocking over the foot and align the inspection toe hole to fall under toes
  • Ensure that the patient’s heel is centred in the heel pocket
  • After the calf portion is applied, start rotating the stocking inward where the break in pressure occurs, so that the gusset is placed over the femoral artery (slightly towards the inside of the thigh)
  • The stitch change in the thigh length stockings should be positioned 3 – 5cm below knee
  • Smooth the stocking up the leg, ensuring there are no folds or creases
  • Patients should be instructed as to proper positioning of the stocking to ensure that the patient will not reposition the stockings incorrectly
